Skrine’s shipping litigation practice has experience in dealing with amongst other things, charter party disputes, cargo claims, mortgagee actions, claims arising from vessel damage, vessel arrest and bunker supply agreements.

Notable Experience

  • Provided expert evidence on Malaysian law on ship arrest in an LMAA international arbitration whose seat of arbitration was in Singapore.
  • Advised client on claims arising from explosions on board a chemical tanker during loading resulting in property damage and fatalities.
  • Represented ship manager in claims for disbursements and ship management fees.
  • Engaged by cargo owners in multi-million dollar cross-border cargo damage claims.
  • Acted as counsel for ship owners in claims against port authorities for damage to a vessel during loading.
  • Engaged by charterer in a charter party dispute with the ship owner.
  • Acted as counsel in multi-million dollar claim for alleged breach of fixed price bunker supply agreement.
  • Advised ship owners on termination issues and the hiring of seafarers.
  • Acted as counsel for receivers to recover charged vessel.
  • Acted as counsel for receivers and managers to recover a charged vessel which was concurrently the subject under lien by competing interested parties.
  • Represented freight forwarders' interest against ship owners.
  • Engaged to act in multi-million dollar shipbuilding contract and joint venture dispute.
  • Engaged to act in an application for enforcement of an international Arbitration Award in Malaysia.
  • Acted in arresting and setting aside arrest of vessels in Malaysian ports for various maritime claims and for ship mortgages.
  • Represented cargo interest in claims based on fraudulent bills of lading.
  • Acted for chargee in recovery of goods which were shipped and detained at an overseas port.
  • Represented a sovereign nation in a ground breaking collision claim involving a naval vessel and a general cargo vessel in Malaysia.
  • Represented owners of a vessel in the first ever oil pollution claim in the Straits of Malacca.
  • Represented owners in a multi-million USD dollar claim based on the issuance of fraudulent bills of lading.
  • Represented owners in a claim arising from a collision claim involving a vessel with an oil platform.
  • Represented a financing bank's interest in a cargo of a hijacked vessel.
  • Represented insurers' interest in cargo claims.
  • Represented clients in demurrage claims.
  • Managed shipping claims for clients internationally.
