Skrine 50th Anniversary Regatta 2013

28 September 2013. Over 300 supporters. Close to 180 dragon boaters. 6 corporate teams. All paddling for charity at the Skrine Regatta 2013.

In conjunction with the firm’s 50th anniversary celebrations, Skrine hosted its second Skrine Regatta: Paddling for Charity dragon boat race. It was again held at the Putrajaya Water Sports Complex. The Skrine Dragons team managed to narrowly clinch the champions trophy fending off a close battle with the KPMG Vikings and the PwC Dragons.

The Skrine Regatta brought together six corporate teams this year, with the teams being the Bursa Bulls, the EY Tritons, HSBC Water Lions, the KPMG Vikings, the PwC Dragons and the Skrine Dragons. The KPMG Vikings in particular were the defending champions of the Skrine Regatta, having clinched first place in its inaugural edition two years ago.

Each team contributed RM5,000 and with the total sum of RM30,000 donated to this year’s adopted charity, the National Autism Society of Malaysia.

With this year’s Regatta aiming to be even bigger and better, the race distance was now increased to 350m. Each team would have to field 18 paddlers, 1 steerer and 1 drummer and with each team allowed to have 10 reserve paddlers to rotate in and out of the various rounds.

At the start of the Regatta, the teams were divided into two heats of 3 boats each. The teams would race twice and with the average timing determining the ranking of the 6 teams. From there, the top 3 teams would advance to the Grand Finals and the remaining 3 teams would duke it out in the Minor Finals.

The Skrine Dragons advanced to the Grand Finals as the top qualifier, closely followed by the PwC Dragons and the KPMG Vikings. This left the EY Tritons, HSBC Water Lions and the Bursa Bulls to first race the Minor Finals.

In the Minor Finals, the EY Tritons clinched first place followed by the HSBC Water Lions and the Bursa Bulls.

This left the Grand Finals to determine who would secure the Skrine Regatta Challenge Trophy. In a closely fought race, the Skrine Dragons managed to surge to the finishing line first and narrowly followed by the KPMG Vikings and then the PwC Dragons.

The teams then had time to continue to mingle and enjoy the day’s festivities by having lunch at the Water Sports Complex as well as enjoy the photo-taking at the photo booth set up.
