  Overview  

Skrine has a prominent IP division. Our services encompass all aspects of intellectual property laws and practice from the inception/creation of the intellectual property right to the proper management, maintenance and enforcement of that right. Our services include advising in respect of character merchandising, copyright protection, franchising, licensing, patent and industrial design registration, technology and telecommunications, trade secrets and confidential information and trademarks.

In addition, the IP division has an IT practice group to meet the needs of clients in the fast growing Information, Communications and Technology industry and a litigation practice group which advises and acts on all aspects of IP protection and enforcement.

We were named as the Malaysian IP Firm of the Year 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016 by Managing Intellectual Property (Managing IP). We are consistently ranked in the top Band or Tier for Intellectual Property since 2009 up to 2017 in respected publications or journals, such as in the Chambers Asia Pacific and the Asia Pacific Legal 500. The division won the Intellectual Property Law Firm of the Year at the Asian Legal Business (ALB) Malaysia Law Awards for 2015 and 2017.

Intellectual Property

Leading IP department offering the full range of litigation and advisory services to major local and multinational clients. Active in patent, industrial design and trade mark prosecution, as well as litigation before different levels of court in Malaysia. Frequently act for clients in the technology, chemical and retail sectors.

Acted for Nuctech Company and Tsinghua University in litigation against another entity that had allegedly infringed one of Nuctech's patents. Represented Vringo Infrastructure in a patent infringement dispute against another company allegedly using Vringo's radio network technology.

Significant clients include SKB Shutters, Syarikat Perusahaan Jooi Bersaudara, Winthrop Pharmaceuticals.

Notable practitioners

Peers describe Khoo Guan Huat as "an excellent counterparty - fair and very sensible in finding solutions." He is an active litigator with experience handling a range of patent, trade mark and copyright disputes. He acted on behalf of Vringo Infrastructure in a patent infringement case.

Charmayne Ong is respected in the market for her non-contentious IP expertise. Her broad practice encompasses trade mark registration and advisory work on patents, data privacy and copyright issues.

Skrine’s IP practice, led by Charmayne Ong, is ‘a force to be reckoned with’. Highlights for Khoo Guan Huat included acting for SKB Shutters Manufacturing in a patent dispute in the Federal Court and representing Winthrop Pharmaceuticals in a patent infringement case against AstraZeneca. Hemalatha Parasa Ramulu acted for Dart Industries in three separate claims for infringement of registered industrial designs against Genesis Plastic Industries.

Khoo Guan Huat represented Winthrop Pharmaceuticals (Malaysia) in a patent invalidity claim against AstraZeneca. The case marked the first time a pharmaceutical patent was invalidated in Malaysia.

Skrine is widely recognised by its industry peers for its outstanding IT, telecommunications & media (ITM) practice and strong connections with the government. Charmayne Ong Poh Yin heads the IP division of the firm.

Ong and Khoo Guan Huat are experienced in advising hardware companies, software suppliers, internet companies and telecommunications players on the acquisition and use of IT, and all licensing and regulations. Lee Tatt Boon is another well-known person, particularly for media.
