David Tan graduated from the University of Nottingham (UK) with a 2:1 LLB (Hons) degree in 2010. He was admitted as a Barrister-At-Law (Gray’s Inn) in 2011 and went on to complete his Master of Laws in International Commercial Law at King’s College London in 2012 with distinction in Negotiation and Dissertation. He was later admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 2013.

David has a keen interest in arbitration and is familiar with International Commercial Arbitration under ICC, LCIA, KLRCA and UNCITRAL Rules. He is also familiar with ICSID Arbitration Rules having studied international arbitration and investor-state arbitration during his Masters at Kings College London under the tutelage of Salim Moollan, QC and V. V. Veeder, QC.

He joined SKRINE as an Associate after his admission to the Malaysian Bar and is now a Senior Associate with the Dispute Resolution Division.

  • Assisting the President of the Arbitral Tribunal in several International Commercial Arbitration proceedings under the ICC Rules 2012, including the drafting of the final award.
  • Advised and drafted settlement agreement on behalf of an MNC relating to a Landlord and Tenant dispute.
  • Co-counsel in the High Court representing an MNC in resisting an action for pre-action discovery under the Norwich Pharmacal rule.
  • Junior counsel in a landmark medical negligence dispute where the Court of Appeal upheld an unprecedented award of damages by the High Court in favour of a client.
  • Co-counsel in the High Court representing a Management Corporation of a Condominium in a suit to enforce condominium By-Laws.
  • Represented a Landlord in various Landlord and Tenancy disputes including recovery of rent, obtaining vacant possession of premises and removal of private caveat at the High Court.
  • Assisting in various Malaysian Bar Professional Indemnity Insurance disputes in the High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court.
  • Assisting the Chairman of Disciplinary Committee in various complaints against advocates and solicitors of Malaysia under the Malaysian Bar Advocates and Solicitors Disciplinary Board.
